Wine Food or Weird Food

So when I first said I wanted to pair bubbles with chicharrones and fries or nanches with friulani and japonés with Pinot blanc people would say, “oh you want to pair weird food with wine.” I thought, Weird!? Weird how? Maybe they were only familiar with traditional Eurocentric pairings or sadly they just hadn’t had the opportunity to try food from different cultures yet!

As simple as these food and wine combination sounded I was beginning to think that to some they seemed a bit radical.

But now as I’m understanding the cultural and historical context around food and working to decolonize my palate, I didn’t want the played out meat and cheese board you find at every other tasting room and wine bar. As serious as I’m making it sound when discussing something so simple I wanted these pairings to not only pair well with a variety of wines, but also represent foods that others along with myself may have fond memories of eating. -DeAnna
